Commie Reviews: Black Mirror Season 6
Black Mirror is first and foremost anti-capitalist, change my mind
Black Mirror Season 6 came out a few days ago, and being a big fan of the show I watched all 5 episodes in one sitting. This definitely wasn’t the best season, but it firmly cemented my prior notion; Black Mirror isn’t about technology gone awry, it’s about capitalism gone awry.
The creator, Charlie Brooker, is a bit subtle about this, but that’s likely only to appeal to a broader audience. Most (but definitely not all) prior Black Mirror episodes are horror stories about either future technology or current technology, and the worst case scenario for each. It doesn’t readily admit that all of these problems stem from the fact that this technology exists under the corrupt system of capitalism.
As a technophile, this annoys me a bit. It’s one of the reasons I decided to write my first novel, Hivemind. I wanted to write a story about futuristic technology that exists solely to enrich society, and (spoiler alert) is incorruptible. But guess what I had to do to make that realistic? I had to make it exist under world-wide communism.
Anyways, read on for my reviews of each episode of the newest Black Mirror season. Massive spoilers below, continue at your own risk:
